Mid-career researcher
The career stage and experience expected of mid-career researchers, and the funding opportunities Wellcome has available for researchers at this career stage.
During this stage in your research career, you will be driving your own research and ready to independently lead an innovative research programme.
As a mid-career researcher, you will be in the early stages of your independent research career. You will usually have completed one or two substantial periods of research after your PhD (or equivalent research training).
You may have directed, or closely guided, the work of others.
You may recently have been appointed to your first independent academic position.
Always check the funding scheme or funding call details for specific eligibility requirements.
If you are a mid-career researcher working in any discipline, you can apply for these funding opportunities providing you meet the individual scheme or call’s eligibility criteria. If you are applying to the Career Development Award or as a coapplicant on a Discovery Award the proposed research must align with our strategy.
A mid-career researcher can hold one Wellcome Award as lead applicant, and be a coapplicant on up to two other Wellcome awards. Read more about how many grants you can hold at the same time.
Contact our Funding Information Advisers if you have a question about funding.
