Gordon is an expert in vaccinology, infection and genomics. His research focuses on the genetic and immunological analysis of host/pathogen interactions during infection, particularly those involving enteric bacteria.

Gordon is currently on secondment from the University of Cambridge, where he is a Professor.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, the UK Academy of Medical Sciences and is a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). He is currently on the board of The International Vaccine Institute based in South Korea and also works as a consultant for industry and international health agencies.
He received his BSc and PhD from the University of Sussex and conducted postdoctoral studies at the University of Washington (Seattle) in the laboratory of Stanley Falkow. He holds Masters from Trinity College Dublin and the University of Cambridge. He was recently awarded an honorary DSc by Imperial College London and is an honorary fellow of Wolfson College, Cambridge. He is a recipient of the Albert B Sabin Gold Medal for his work on vaccine equity.
